Acupuncture & Moxibustion

The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon was the first text to systematically record the theory of meridians and acupoints, while the Systematic Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion established acupuncture as an independent discipline. Historical schools of acupuncture each favoured distinct techniques and point-selection approaches; alongside materia medica and processing craft, acupuncture forms one of the two core pillars — external and internal therapy — of Chinese medicine. This hall traces the historical origins and cultural context of acupuncture, without making claims about specific clinical efficacy — for current clinical evidence, please consult professional literature and medical institutions.

Materia Medica

The Divine Farmer's Materia Medica, the earliest systematic classification of Chinese herbs, grouped them into "upper, middle, and lower" grades according to their nature and use. Ginseng, known in northeastern folk tradition as "bangcha," carries an entire body of forest customs and taboo language around its harvest — one of the few living folk traditions still practised today. This hall tells the cultural and historical story behind each herb, without making claims about efficacy — for current evidence and safety data on any herb, see our AMMKB Materia Medica Knowledge Base.

The Craft of Processing

The current Chinese Pharmacopoeia groups traditional processing methods into thirteen categories — cleaning, cutting, stir-frying, roasting with liquid, steaming, calcining, boiling, simmering, fermenting, singeing, powdering by heat, water-milling, and germinating. Traditional theory holds that processing changes a herb's properties — for instance, honey-roasting is traditionally said to aid the lungs, and "steaming and sun-drying nine times" is said to moderate a herb's potency; these are traditional empirical claims, and current clinical evidence should be consulted separately. Beijing Tongrentang's traditional processing involves more than twenty steps and over fifty techniques, with regional schools such as the "Beijing style" and "Zhang style" each preserving distinct hand-crafted traditions still practised today.

Higher Education & Research Institutions

The following is a compilation of publicly available information about Chinese medicine higher-education and research institutions in China, presented for cultural and scientific context only. It does not imply any partnership, endorsement, or accreditation relationship.

In 2015, five of the earliest Chinese medicine universities founded after 1949 — in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Nanjing — jointly established the World-Class Chinese Medicine University Alliance, forming the historical core of China's Chinese medicine higher-education system. In addition, the Chinese Materia Medica discipline at Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was also selected for the national "Double First-Class" initiative in both the first (2017) and second (2022) rounds — the only Chinese medicine institution beyond the founding five to be so recognised. Chinese medicine disciplines at universities in other provinces are generally included in provincial-level "high-level discipline" or "key discipline" programmes, a different tier from the national "Double First-Class" initiative. On the research side, the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences — founded in 1955 and directly affiliated with the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine — operates 18 research institutes and 6 affiliated medical institutions. Both Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and the Academy host National Medical Products Administration key laboratories for Chinese medicine research and evaluation.

The six cases below are selected under strict criteria — each has a verifiable classical source and an academically recognised modern finding. They do not constitute an endorsement of the overall efficacy of Chinese medicine theory or any specific therapy.

From the crushed juice of sweet wormwood recorded in the Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies, to artemisinin crystals in a modern laboratory — some specific observations recorded in the history of Chinese medicine were later verified or further elucidated by modern scientific methods. This hall presents six such cases of dialogue between past and present, spanning the discovery of artemisinin, ephedrine, berberine, and huperzine A, as well as the mechanism of acupuncture analgesia and the practice of smallpox inoculation — each case citing its classical textual source and the key researchers, dates, and publications behind its modern verification.

Food as Medicine, Medicine as Food

The following is a historical and cultural account of the "food as medicine" theory and its official catalogue, and does not make claims about the modern efficacy of any specific ingredient — for current evidence and safety data, see our AMMKB Materia Medica Knowledge Base.

The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon and the Divine Farmer's Materia Medica established the theoretical basis for "food as medicine, medicine as food." Since 2002, China's national health authorities have issued a series of official notices listing substances such as codonopsis, astragalus, angelica, American ginseng, reishi and gastrodia as being "both food and Chinese materia medica," a list expanded several times to over one hundred entries today. This hall traces the classical sources of this theory, the evolution of the official catalogue, and classic combinations recorded in historical texts.

Medicinal Wine Culture

The following is a historical and cultural account of classical texts and traditional craft related to medicinal wine, and does not make claims about the modern efficacy of any specific product; the production and sale of alcoholic products are separately regulated, and official regulations should be consulted.

The Book of Han calls wine "the foremost of all medicines." A dedicated chapter of the Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon discusses "laoli" (early medicinal wine), the Fifty-Two Prescriptions records more than 35 wine-based formulas, and the "safflower wine" recorded in the Essentials of the Golden Cabinet established the later tradition of naming medicinal wines after their principal ingredient. This hall traces the classical origins of wine's role in Chinese medicine, and the evolution of traditional craft from natural fermentation to distillation-based infusion.

Chinese traditional medicine is not a single system. Alongside the Han-majority tradition of Chinese medicine, ethnic groups including the Tibetan, Mongolian, Uyghur, Dai, Zhuang, and Miao peoples independently developed their own medical theories and clinical practices. From the Tibetan three-humor theory and The Four Medical Tantras, to Mongolian bone-setting, the Uyghur four-humor theory, the Dai "four elements and five aggregates," the Zhuang "synchronized three qi," and the Miao "Theory of Origination and the 108 patterns" — these systems have coexisted and exchanged knowledge with Chinese medicine over centuries.

Australian Herbal Medicine

(Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people)传承数万年的丛林药方(Bush Medicine)知识体系,作为本馆立足澳大利亚这片土地的致意之厅。

This hall presents the Bush Medicine knowledge system of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, passed down over tens of thousands of years — offered as this museum's tribute to the land on which it stands, in Australia. Content is compiled solely from public academic literature and knowledge Aboriginal communities have shared publicly; it does not include specific formulations or ceremonial details, and does not make claims about modern clinical efficacy. For any actual medical treatment, please consult licensed professional institutions.

Aboriginal Australians have lived on this continent for more than sixty thousand years, developing over that long history a body of traditional plant-medicine knowledge independent of other medical systems in the world, known as Bush Medicine — with more than 1,500 traditional medicinal plants recorded to date. This hall now presents seventeen featured cases: the tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), the eucalyptus, the golden wattle, Australia's national floral emblem, the emu bush, the river mint, the kangaroo apple, the Kakadu plum — one of the richest known natural sources of vitamin C, the corkwood — whose traditional use gave rise to the modern drug scopolamine, the lemon myrtle — rich in citral, the quandong — a desert fruit bridging food and medicine, the mountain pepper, and the old man weed, with a documented history of use spanning more than a century, as well as the paperbark — often called the "bush bandage," the pigface — used to soothe stings and burns, the goat's foot vine — found across the wider Indo-Pacific coastal region, the conkerberry from the Central Australian desert, and the snake vine, traditionally used to relieve pain and inflammation. Among these, the traditional use of tea tree carries the earliest and most complete scientific documentation — in the 1920s, Australian chemist Arthur Penfold confirmed through experiments the tea tree oil's significant antibacterial potency, one of the early instances of Bush Medicine knowledge entering the view of modern science.
